NSF Summer Research Experience
for Undergraduates Program

The Department of Chemical
Engineering at the University
of South Carolina ( USC ) is
pleased to announce their Summer
Research Fellowship Program
for 2012! These fellowships
are sponsored by the National
Science Foundation ( NSF ) Research
Experience for Undergraduates
( REU ) Program. Summer Participants
will have the opportunity to
conduct research in an academic
setting under the direction
of one of our full-time faculty
members. Emphasis will be placed
on using state-of-the-art experimental
and computational facilities.
Special events such as seminars,
workshops, visits to local industries,
and socials are planned throughout
the summer. The Summer Research
Fellowship Program as USC focuses
on sustainable energy.

The program is limited to
U.S. citizens and permanent
residents of the U.S. Applicants
must be enrolled in a Chemical
Engineering or related program
and have a cumulative GPA of
at least 3.0. Students graduating
in or before August 2012 are
not eligible. Interested students
should submit the completed
application form along with
the requested supporting materials
by March 9, 2012.

The Department of Chemical
Engineering at the University
of South Carolina has 26 faculty
members ( 22 teaching faculty
), ~85 graduate students ( the
majority are Ph.D. candidates
), and 160 undergraduates. It
occupies one third of the Swearingen
Engineering Center, a state
of the art facility located
in downtown Columbia. Columbia
is strategically located in
the center of South Carolina,
within a two-hour drive of the
South Carolina Beaches ( e.g.,
Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Hilton
Head Island ), and the North
Carolina Mountains ( e.g., Asheville,
Smoky Mountain National Park
).
