NSF Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates Program

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of South Carolina (USC) is pleased to announce their Summer Research Fellowship Program for 2008! These fellowships are sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program. Summer Participants will have the opportunity to conduct research in an academic setting under the direction of one of our 20 full-time faculty members. Emphasis will be placed on using state-of-the-art experimental and computational facilities. Special events such as seminars, workshops, visits to local industries, and socials are planned throughout the summer. The Summer Research Fellowship Program at USC has one major thrust area in:


 

Green Chemistry in Chemical Engineering

  • Green Chemistry & Catalysis

  • Batteries & Fuel Cells

  • Hydrogen Production & Storage

  • Polymers & Nanoscience

Check-in:  Saturday May 24th, 2008

Orientation: Sunday May 25th

Final Presentations:  Thursday July 31st

Check-out: Friday & Saturday, August 1st & 2nd

The financial provisions for this program include:

             *Ten-week stipend of $4,800

             *Free on-campus housing (apartment style), includes kitchen area and common living room

             *Travel expenses up to $500, adjustable for distance travel

The program is limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents of the U.S.  Applicants must be enrolled in a Chemical Engineering or related program and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.  Students graduating in or before August 2008 are not eligible. Program orientation will be Sunday, May 25th, and the REU Final Presentation Symposium will be held Thursday, July 31st, 2008. Interested students should submit the completed application form along with the requested supporting materials.

Summer REU 2008 Schedule

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of South Carolina has 25 faculty members (20 teaching faculty), ~60 graduate students (the majority are Ph.D. candidates), and 157 undergraduates. It occupies one third of the Swearingen Engineering Center, a state of the art facility located in downtown Columbia. Columbia is strategically located in the center of South Carolina, within a two-hour drive of the South Carolina Beaches (e.g., Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head Island), and the North Carolina Mountains (e.g., Asheville, Smoky Mountain National Park).
