Melanie Schaal is from Sumter, SC. She received
her B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of South
Carolina, Columbia in May 2004. Her first research experience was
through an REU at the University of Illinois-Chicago under the
supervision of Dr. Regalbuto. She worked on a simple technique to
determine surface charging parameters in an aqueous solution. Melanie
also had the privilege of participating in the REU Japan program at
Sophia University in Tokyo under the guidance of Dr. Segawa. While
she was in Japan she worked with the preparation and characterization
of boria-alumina catalysts for hydrodesulfurization. She has also
worked in industry at Roche Carolina, a pharmaceutical company in
Florence, SC. While she was there she worked in Launch, IPC, and the
Pilot Plant. In August 2004 Melanie began working on her PhD at USC
under the supervision of Dr. Williams and Dr. John Monnier. Her
research focuses on testing the effectiveness of electroless
deposition for EpB formation.
