About Chemical Engineering
Chemical
engineers design, build, and operate manufacturing processes that
produce a variety of products that meet society's needs. Applying their
knowledge of chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics, chemical
engineers strive to create processes and products that are safe,
environmentally friendly, energy efficient, and economical.
Many
industries employ chemical engineers, including producers of
petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, paper, and plastics. Chemical
engineers also make vital contributions to energy production,
semiconductor manufacturing, agriculture and food processing, and the
development of medical products and therapies.
Chemical
engineers are also at the forefront of research and development efforts
leading to the next generation of clean, economical energy sources,
high performance consumer products, and even advanced systems for space
exploration.
Since their talents are in great
demand, chemical engineers receive some of the highest starting
salaries earned by BS graduates. Beyond monetary rewards, chemical
engineers also experience great personal satisfaction for the
contributions they make to the health, welfare, and prosperity of our
society.
